40TH ANNUAL COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN APRIL 1ST 2017!

40 years ago, if you were a runner in the Bridge Run, SC 40 years ago… you would be feeling the wobbling John P. Grace Memorial Bridge buckling underneath you as you crossed over the Cooper River from Mount Pleasant headed to downtown Charleston and finishing at our beloved Marion Square. The bridge was declared unsafe for heavy trucks over ten tons in 1979 and the South Carolina Department of Transportation eliminated the reversible lane on the Silas N. Pearman Bridge; which had been used for the Bridge Run course. The Cooper River Bridge Run is an annual 10 kilometer (6.2 mi) one way road running event, the Saturday before Easter weekend. The Bridge Run is the only competition in South Carolina sanctioned by USA Track and Field as an elite event. Based on the number of racers (capped at 40K and attended by thousands and thousands more), this event is the third largest 10K and fifth largest road race in the United States!!! The race commenced in the mid 70’s, the catalyst for the event was Dr. Marcus Newberry, an employee of MUSC ( Medical University of South Carolina) had noticed in his hometown of Bonne Bell, Ohio while on a visit, that they had built a running track around their offices to encourage the physical fitness of their employees. Dr. Newberry wanted to bring this amazing concept to his new home in the metropolitan Charleston area. He conceptualized the best avenue to do so, was to feature an event running through the bridges crossing the Cooper River. This mission of encouraging physical fitness and health still holds true for the races mission today. This year in honor of the 40th anniversary, there were 40 Days of Bridge Run, with events, raffles and giveaways. There was also the culted after Battle of the Bands for the premier spot at the top of the bridge during the run. This event in a lot of ways defines Charleston…. Able to compete with the major cities as a smaller glorified “village” as we would like to think about it. Focused on the physical beauty and majesty we get to observe daily. Encouraging happy and healthy lifestyles’ and supported by the whole community, who loves to call Charleston “Home”. Don’t miss it!
